This particular stateside had its share of burdens and hardships. One challenge, which was also a blessing, was Grant having shoulder surgery. He has had an injury since high school that has regularly bothered him over the years. He was recommended for surgery a few times, but never had the time to commit to the recovery and therapy. With this being our longest stateside, he was finally able to get the surgery done. Despite being out of commission for a few weeks, he had an amazing recovery and was fully functional, with full range of motion, within a few months.
Another challenge we faced during this stateside was with my mom, who was diagnosed with breast cancer a few months before we arrived. One of missionaries’ biggest fears on the field is that a family member will have an emergency or health issues and we will not be able to be there with them. It is by God’s great providence that we were able to be there with her throughout the duration of her chemo. Now, with four little boys in her home I am not sure we were always such a “help” to her…but I am so glad God allowed us to be there during that time. By the time we left for Madagascar, she was cancer free and doing great. I am so grateful for her!
