One benefit of living in a town where there isn’t much to do is that you tend to save money. So, we spend several years saving and then get to spoil ourselves a little once we get to the states! And one of our favorite ways of spoiling ourselves is to take an overdue family vacation with my parents, brothers, and their families.

It is always a little bitter sweet. We all love getting to see one another, and the kids have a blast (there are ten grandkids – all one year apart)! But, it is always sad to see that our boys have to reacquaint themselves with their cousins, re-learning names and personalities. And it is even sadder when the vacation is over and we don’t know when we will see each other again. You can really see the speed of time when you only get to see your nephews and nieces every few years. They grow so fast and you miss so much in their lives.

These are some of the toughest times for me personally as a missionary. Growing up as an Army kid I always felt disappointed in not having a closer relationship with our extended family. It was one of the toughest parts of our lifestyle. And now I have to watch my kids experience the same struggle. We are thankful for great internet and a family that works hard to love on us from far away. My prayer is that God will give my boys special relationships with their family despite the distance!
