Whale Watching with Daddy

Grant and Steve were awesome daddies this week.  They decided to take out Eli and Ryleigh on an all day boat trip in search of whales.  The Mozambique Channel fills with whales this time of year as they migrate north in search of warmer waters to have their babies.  Lots of species roam the waters, but humpback seems to be pretty common.  The group headed out before 6AM to catch the lakana.  "Lakana" is the Malagasy word for a small dugout canoe with a sail.  This one had a motor rigged up to it.

A Pretty Amazing Daddy!

After about two hours of sitting on wooden bench about 4 inches wide, the "captain" spotted a whale several miles away.  While the guys strained to see the speck, the captain asked if they were ready to go get lunch.  Grant and Steve asked if they could keep looking, and the guy obliged.  Thirty minutes later, they were literally yards from a pod of whales.  A 12+ meter humpback whale, with new baby in tow, played right next to them for about 20 minutes.  Another gave the kids a good show when it leaped into the air.  The guys definitely got a little nervous a few times.  But the kids loved it!  Unfortunately, the waves didn't allow for any good still shots (though they did get videos!)....

Can you find the whale??  This one was pretty far away...
After getting some up-close whale time, they headed towards the town of Anakao for lunch and R&R.  The guys relaxed in hammocks while the little ones played on the beach.  Gorgeous water right??

Sand-Time with Ryleigh and Eli

Finally, they returned home, riding along the coast.  Eli had a great day and loved getting to see the whales (and a dolphin!).  His favorite part was seeing the new baby whale.
