Saying Hello Again

On our way back to Madagascar

It’s no secret that we have missed Madagascar from the moment our feet stepped onto the plane to leave for the US.  At times we have even felt guilty about not missing America more, but we know that God has given us a special love for the Malagasy people and the ministry He has called us to.  Coming back to the island after five months was very surreal.  Everything was the same, but at the same time something felt different.  Have you ever moved from a town and returned at a later date for a visit?  While many things look the same, it feels different and somewhat uncomfortable.  Like you don’t fit there the same way.  As time has gone on, we have felt more and more comfortable here again.  Our bodies are adjusting to the heat, we are picking up on language again, and we are starting to figure out our new family dynamics with three little ones.  Returning for a second term definitely has a different feel to it.  You are no longer “new” missionaries.  You are not quite “seasoned” but you have learned a lot and are in a new stage.  The excitement of living in a new place has been replaced by realistic expectations, but also a sense of security and peace.  Locals no longer act shocked about your presence, but they do turn to you for advice and wisdom.  It feels like you just moved overseas yesterday, but your ability to relate and empathize with the plights of new missionaries seems to be further and further removed.  It is a strange new season of ministry to be in!

Despite some of the challenges of returning, one of the best parts of being back is returning to our team here in Tulear.  What an amazing group of friends we have!  I can’t tell you how much we missed them!
