Home Visits
Today we honed our bargaining skills and got a fair price on the bus. Probably better than we should have! Loveness, our Zambian helper, set up 2 meetings with families in Mtendere. The first family wasn't expecting us, but were very welcoming. We met several young children and the two ladies of the house. Pear, Loveness' niece, is the head of the house. She was quiet and reserved but answered our questions about her family and Zambian culture. Pear just went through a divorce, was suffering from depression, and still recovering from TB. Her eyes seemed sad. We prayed for their family before we left.
The second family we visited was part of Loveness' church family. There were many children there. We sat inside the dark house talking to the eldest son, James, and daughter, Edith. They were excited to host us and eagerly answered our questions. There were many silent moments during both visits. They were comfortable with the silence but we struggled to keep the conversation going.
