Healing with Seashells and Quills!
We were able to have some interesting interviews today. The first interview was with a group of ladies (and tons of onlooking children) about healthcare. We were able to hear about how healthcare works and were able to better understand why it is a struggle for survival. The most interesting part of our conversation was hearing about pregnancy and childbirth. The Zambian ladies go to the clinic to give birth, but no one is allowed to go with them. They are given no medication until after the baby is born. They are not allowed to scream during labor, or the nurses yell at them. If they deliver at 8AM they need to check out by 4PM! What strong women!
After talking to these Christian ladies we went to a traditional healer's shop. Most of the items for sale consisted of some type of root. We also saw porcipine quills (meant to be lit and sniffed to stop nose bleeds) and sea shells (to help hearing and sight!). The girl was young who was working in the shop. She had learned to be a traditional healer from her mother. She told us about a mixture they give to people with AIDS and STDs to cure them. They are told to take 6 months of the "prescription" without any meds from the hospital. It was very sad, but we listened with interest. We asked if we could come back again on Friday to share a story. She said yes.
